Possible confusion with A. arvensis L., 1753, whose flowers and leaves are not scented, while those of A. cotula emit a foul odor when crushed.
Intergeneric hybridization is possible with Cota tinctoria (L.) J.Gay, 1845 to produce × Cotanthemis bollei (Sch.Bip. ex Asch.) J.M.H.Shaw, 2023, P (hom. syn. A. × bollei Sch.Bip. ex Asch., 1866).
