Notes
Possible confusion with C. jacea L., 1753, whose flowers have phyllaries with an entire or lacinate appendage, while those of C. decipiens have phyllaries with a ciliate appendage.
Possible confusion with C. nigra L., 1753, whose flowers have phyllaries with an uniform, dark brown appendage, while those of C. decipiens have phyllaries with paler cilia on their appendage.
This taxon is likely a stabilized hybrid of C. jacea L., 1753 × C. nigra L., 1753.
The following infraspecific taxa are accepted:
- C. decipiens subsp. decipiens Thuill., 1799, P;
- C. decipiens subsp. microptilon (Godr.) G.H.Loos, 2010;
