Notes
Possible confusion with E. plantagineum L., 1771, whose flowers have a corolla which is hairy only on the edge and the ridges, and whose leaves have visible secondary veins, while E. vulgare has flowers whose corolla is uniformly pubescent, and has leaves with only the main vein visible.
The following infraspecific taxa are accepted:
- E. vulgare subsp. pustulatum (Sm.) Bonnier & Layens, P (het. syn. E. vulgare var. pustulatum (Sibth. ex Sm.) Coincy, 1900);
- E. vulgare subsp. vulgare L., 1753, P (het. syn. E. vulgare var. vulgare L., 1753).
