Notes
Possible confusion with C. nepeta (L.) Kuntze, 1891, which has flowers with shorter lower calyx teeth (< 2 mm) and usually entire leaves, while C. menthifolium subsp. ascendens has flowers with longer lower calyx teeth (2 - 2.5 mm) and usually dentate leaves.
The following infraspecific taxa are accepted:
- C. menthifolium subsp. ascendens (Jord.) Govaerts, 1999, P (hom. syn. C. nepeta subsp. ascendens (Jord.) B.Bock, 2012);
- C. menthifolium subsp. hirtum (Briq.) Govaerts, 1999;
- C. menthifolium subsp. menthifolium (Host) Merino, 1906, P (hom. syn. C. nepeta subsp. sylvaticum (Bromf.) Peruzzi & F.Conti, 2008).
Hybridizes with:
- C. nepeta (L.) Kuntze, 1891 to produce C. × conillii (Sennen) Starm., 2011, P (hom. syn. C. nepeta nothosubsp. conillii (Sennen) B.Bock, 2012);
- C. vulgare L., 1753 to produce C. × cadevallii (Sennen) Starm., 2011, P.
