Possible confusion with C. menthifolium subsp. ascendens (Jord.) Govaerts, 1999, which has flowers with longer lower calyx teeth (2 - 2.5 mm) and usually dentate leaves, while C. nepeta has flowers with shorter lower calyx teeth (< 2 mm) and usually entire leaves.
Hybridizes with C. menthifolium subsp. ascendens (Jord.) Govaerts, 1999 to produce C. × conillii (Sennen) Starm., 2011, P (hom. syn. C. nepeta nothosubsp. conillii (Sennen) B.Bock, 2012).
