Notes

Possible confusion with L. usitatissimum L., 1753, which has broader leaves (1.5-3 mm) and larger, usually azure blue flowers (12-15 mm petals), while L. bienne has narrower leaves (< 1.5 mm) and smaller, usually pale blue flowers (9-13 mm petals).

The following infraspecific taxa are accepted:

L. bienne var. bienne Mill., 1768, P (het. syn. L. usitatissimum subsp. angustifolium (Huds.) Thell., 1912);
L. bienne var. siculum (C.Presl) Giardina & Raimondo, 2007.
