Notes
Some individuals have black, white, or black on white basal spots.
Possible confusion with P. dubium L., 1753, whose seed capsules are more elongated (length/width ratio ≥ 2.5 and < 3.5), while those of P. rhoeas are less elongated (length/width ratio ≤ 2).
The following infraspecific taxa are accepted:
- P. rhoeas subsp. polytrichum (Boiss. & Kotschy) J.Thiébaut, 1936;
- P. rhoeas subsp. rhoeas L., 1753, P.
Hybridizes with P. dubium L., 1753 to produce P. × strigosum (Boenn.) Schur, 1877, P (het. syn. P. × hungaricum Borbás, 1900).
