Notes

Hybrid of A. adiantum-nigrum L., 1753 × A. onopteris L., 1753.

The first individual below was found in a mixed population, primarily composed of A. adiantum-nigrum, along with some individuals of A. onopteris. Its appearance is intermediate between A. adiantum-nigrum and A. onopteris, with finely cut pinnules and slightly caudate pinnae. The fronds are larger than those of the surrounding individuals of A. adiantum-nigrum, with two of them having been measured at 39 and 52 cm, which tends to indicate an hybrid origin (hybrid vigor). The presence of aborted spores could not be confirmed due to their maturity. The pinnules are mostly not mucronate, some of them being slightly so.

While I am reasonably confident about the hybrid nature of this individual based on macroscopic criteria, it has not been subjected to cytological examination or spore verification; thus, it remains a potential hybrid.

The second was found later in the same area. Its appearance is closer to A. onopteris, but with slightly caudate pinnae. The larger fronds have been measured at 63 and 65 cm, and the sori are reddish-brown. An examination under a microscope revealed the presence of aborted, shrunk and agglomerated spores, and no viable ones.

I regularly encounter similar individuals (large size, reddish sori) in mixed populations, or sometimes isolated. This hybrid is known to form quite easily in mixed populations (Prelli & Boudrie, 2024) and can sometimes be found in large numbers in the absence of A. onopteris (Tison & de Foucault, 2014).

Triploid (2n = 216).
