Possible confusion with S. columbaria L., 1753, which has flower heads that remain flat during fructification, while S. atropurpurea has flower heads that elongate during fructification.

Possible confusion with Knautia spp., which have flower heads that remain flat during fructification and small calyx teeth, while S. atropurpurea has flower heads that elongate during fructification and long bristle-like calyx teeth.
