Possible confusion with O. vernus (Bellardi) Dumort., 1827, whose flowering period ranges from may to july, while that of O. vulgaris ranges from august to october.

The following infraspecific taxa are accepted:

• O. vulgaris subsp. siculus (Guss.) Bolliger, 1996;
• O. vulgaris subsp. vulgaris Moench, 1794, P.

Previously treated as a subspecies of O. vernus under the name O. vernus subsp. serotinus Corb., 1894.
