Possible confusion with P. arenastrum Boreau, 1857, whose tepals are joined on more than 40% of their length, while those of P. aviculare are joined on less than 40% of their length.

Possible confusion with P. rurivagum Jord. ex Boreau, 1857, whose leaves are narrower (length/width ratio > 8), while those of P. aviculare are broader (length/width ratio < 8).
