Notes

Not to be confused with A. saccharum Marshall, 1785, which is the main species used in the production of mapple syrup in the world (70%), along with A. rubrum L., 1753 (29%). A. nigrum F.Michx., 1818 and A. saccharinum L., 1753 only account for the remaining 1% of the production (PPAQ, 2020).

Hybridizes with A. rubrum L., 1753 to produce A. × freemanii A.E.Murray, 1969.
