Notes
Possible confusion with D. affinis subsp. affinis (Lowe) Fraser-Jenk., 1979, which has abundant reddish-brown scales on the petiole, and symmetrical basal pinnae with entire pinnules, while D. affinis subsp. borreri has few light brown scales on the petiole, more or less asymmetrical basal pinnae, and dentate or at least lobed basal pinnules.
This subspecies was previously treated at species level under the name D. borreri (Newman) Kinahan, 1856.
Apogamous triploid (n = 2n = 123).

- D. affinis subsp. borreri f. dilatata (Luerss.) Fraser-Jenk., 2024;

Hybridizes with:
- D. filix-mas (L.) Schott, 1834 to produce D. × complexa nothosubsp. critica: pentaploid (2n = 205)
- nothof. critica Fraser-Jenk., 1987: f. borreri, P (hom. syn. D. × critica (Fraser-Jenk.) Fraser-Jenk., 2007);
- nothof. urbachensis (S.Jess. & Bujnoch) Fraser-Jenk., 2024: f. dilatata.
Named after William Borrer (1781-1862), an English botanist.
